Are you considering a pet for Christmas??

There are so many things to consider when thinking of a pet! The cost of vet visits, housing the pet when you are away, the cost of the pets toys, bed, etc. Is your house big enough for the size of pet you want? Do you need a fenced yard? Will the pet be appropriate for the children in the home? (did you know small dogs don’t typically like young children?) Are you prepared to handle accidents in your house?

I’m sure there are more that I’m not even thinking of! It can get exciting when thinking of getting a pet. Your child will get excited. You tend to get so caught up in the excitement that you forget all the things you need to consider before you get a pet.

One thing I would strongly suggest is consider adopting or rescuing a pet instead of buying from a pet store! Often there are many advantages to this! Most likely you will be paying a lot less than you would at a pet store, you often will get a pet that is house trained or somewhat trained for crate, litter box, etc. You have a better idea of the personality of the pet.

The Nashville Humane Association has pets for adoption. There is also a site called Nashville Life that lists many rescues.

Happy Tales Humane is a rescue that has a good reputation. You definitely want to check out and research the rescue to make sure they are legit and the animals are well taken care of. They should be up to date on their shots and there should not be any major underlying health problem that either isn’t disclosed or taken care of.

Maybe your not quite ready for a permanent pet. You can foster a pet as well! You can care for a pet and get the feel for what it would take to have a pet in your home.
