Smyrna Offers Some Great Meat & Threes
A “Meat and Three” is something this Midwestern gal never heard of until I moved to Middle Tennessee. When I did finally figure out that a “Meat and Three” is just another name for GREAT SOUTHERN COOKING, I was hooked! Traditionally, these restaurants let you pick one of several main course selections (the meat) ranging from fried chicken to roast beef to turkey, then you pick three veggies to go with them … again from a huge selection that could include fried okra, green beans, corn, collard greens, navy beans, cucumbers & tomatoes, mashed potatoes, and more. Then they’ll throw in a piece of cornbread or a roll - and a sweet tea - for $7.99.
We are very lucky in North Rutherford County to have several amazing cafes that offer these affordable (and delectable) meals. My favorites are Breaking Bread on the square in Smyrna, The Rocking Chair Cafe over by Gil’s shopping center in Smyrna, and Kim & Bev’s place on Old Nashville Highway in LaVergne. I must admit, though, that when I go to Kim & Bev’s it’s the hamburger that I usually order because those are mighty good.
So if you find yourself in Smyrna or LaVergne and you’re craving some good food, you’ll thank me later when you try one of those three great options!
