The 2009 Pageant and State Competition for the Tennessee Twirlers was held June 26-27th in Memphis and young ladies from Rutherford County won three of the five queen titles. Baton twirling is a sport in which both girls and boys compete, however the majority of the athletes are girls (which if I were a boy I’d be all about that!).

At the pageant, the following queen winners were announced:

Miss Tennessee of Baton - Erica King, LaVergne Junior Miss Tennessee of Baton - Melissa Tyson, LaVergne Majorette Doll of Tennessee Baton - Selina King, Memphis Little Miss Tennessee of Baton - Enga Donald, Memphis Tiny Miss Tennessee of Baton - Jayden Deaver, Murfreesboro

The senior queen competition consisted of a talent portion, modeling, interview, baton twirl solo, and baton strut. As Moms (of which I am one) watched nervously - our hearts racing and our stomachs churning with butterflies - we became hoarse when our daughters were named winners! As in many sports, the countless hours of practice and then more practice really paid off. The girls coaches included former Miss Tennessee of Baton and MTSU baton coach Niki Davis, world grand champion Glenn Bittenbender, featured MTSU twirler Alyse Gilman, and former Miss Tennessee of Baton JeriAnne Wells.

Baton classes are available starting in the Fall in Murfreesboro. We would also like to resume classes in LaVergne if enough new students will sign up. Please feel welcome to contact me at (615) 491-2161 for more information about baton twirling.

Finally, I just want to say that I am so proud of all the girls who showed exemplary sportsmanship before, during and after the competition. Congratulations!
